Socom 3 First impressions.

Well I played the S3 US beta most of last night and here are my initial thoughts.

Gameplay
1. Its very different to socom 1 + 2
2. Controller setting suck at the minute cause we can't change our look speed etc its greyed out and set on recruit by default :(
3. Good news is the controller settings options can be access online, so you won't have to log off to change them when full game is released.
4. New controller layout works well, with the comms button now L2 meaning you can talk while shooting, the quick switch toggle on L1 works well.
5. The new game modes are good, haven't had the chance to play convoy yet, but I've played the control points one, and this is a good addition, and tactical.
6. Swimming is pretty cool

Maps
1. Maps are gigantic - in my opinion so far too big, but they probably feel bigger than they actually are at the moment because I don't know my way around them yet. (We only have one map on the beta "Harvester")
2. Graphics are good, good advancement from socom 2, some of the features of the map look very nice graphically.
3. Can play the maps in night or day - night maps are very dark, but the night vision is excellent and you basically play the entire map in night vision (3rd person)
4. Also a weather option on the create a game screen, although in the beta this is greyed out, so I expect they are adding this for the final version.
5. Respawn, can play respawn on any mode, so for example I played a respawn last night which was demolition, so normal respawn with objectives, when the objective met you restart another round.
6. Can play all modes on all maps.
7. Spawn points, can select from 2 or 3 different spawn points on the maps in the lobby, you select which one you want to spawn at.

LAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGG / Hit System
1. only one thing to say here - no lag - not experienced even the slightest bit of lag or framerate slowdown at all yet (although only played about 5 or 6 games so far)
2. Hit system is back to socom 1 days, just slightly more hits than socom 1 probably - I would say on average 5 accurate bullets put people down. - very refreshing
3. Theres no health bar as such, there is a very small vertical bar next to your name, but not really noticed if it goes down as you take hits, but the fact that you die quickly means its not really important anyhow.
4. It handles 32 players without a problem from what I can tell.

Vehicles
1. Overall I think these are a good addition - due the size of the maps
2. Only certain routes vehicles can go, alot of routes are not very wide so can only go on foot.
3. I've been run over about 3 or 4 times so far, so this could get annoying after a while
4. The guns on the back of the vehicles are quite powerfull and you can shoot people easily with them.
5. However this is balanced out a bit by the fact that vehicles stick out like a sore thumb, you hear them coming a mile off, and they appear on your radar also, plus there are things like vehicle mines and at4s that can take vehicles out quite easily - and the vehicles make a huge explosion
6. You can take the people out in the vehicles pretty easily, especially the guy on the turret.

Weapons
1. Lots of new weapons to choose from plus the old favourites
2. you get to add 2 attachments to your primary weapon, and one attachment to your handgun, and you have 2 equipment slots for grenades / ammo etc.
3. You only get 2 grenades in each batch now.
4. The more you choose the slower your character moves, and it is noticable, first time I played I kitted myself out with the works, M16 with suppressor and long range scope, plus a pistol suppressor, and double grenades, felt like I was carrying a hippo on my back :d
5. Think the encumbrance thing will be a good thing, because it will make clan wars more tactical, cause you'll have people who are camping kitting themselves out with heavy stuff, and your people on the move will go with lighter options.
6. You can put suppressors on all the guns from what I can tell, but they do have an effect on the accuracy, power and range of the gun.
7. From what I can tell, there isn't any guns I've seen that fall into the noob category - but obviously way to early to tell - a good early indication of this is lots of people are all using different guns.

I'll get some videos done over the next week or so to give you all a peek.

fingers crossed it remains the same when 30,000+ log on to the servers when the game is released, and when it transfers onto the eu servers.

Sure it will though, the graphics engine and hit system look much more "finished" in socom 3

Odin - Just read the forums find the people that are moaning about the beta and saying how poo socom 3 is, PM them and say "sounds like your not impressed by the S3 beta - are you interested in selling it" Offer em $50 or so - paypal em - ask them to stick in the US Postal Service on Global Priority Mail (small envelope costs $5 and take apprx a week to deliver or you can pay $30 - $40 to get in a few days quicker) and Bobs your uncle and Fanny's your aunt.

Theres quite a few people around that have managed to receive two copies in the post, so they should be easy targets as well.

Or do a search on US ebay, there are quite a few popping up on there, but you'll probably end up paying more.
